This card is the best thing that has happened to me in my entire life. It entitles me, a a severely sight impaired person to free transport on all public transport within London. In Johannesburg being unable to safely and affordable get around caused me so much stress that I had panic attacks. My transport is now paid for by my local council #freedomofmovement#londonlove#takingmylifeback#visionimpaired
One of my favorite Christmas traditions growing up was driving around to see all the Christmas lights & then sneaking into my grandparents’ restaurant to have hot chocolate. So when we had a last minute change of plans last night, my brother and I still wanted to find something fun to do with Ry so that he enjoyed his night.
So after visiting Nana at work for dinner, we headed out to see some lights! It didn’t quite go as planned.... with Ry being blind, he does have some light perception, but it has to be really bright for him to see it, so unfortunately, driving past houses didn’t really do it for him.
But this house.. I think he could’ve stayed there for hours. We’re already planning a trip back next week. I’m so happy that he had such a fun night & that a tradition I loved so much as a kid I can now do with my kiddos too. 🎄❤️

I wired this makeshift piano using the thinkershield, tin foil, cardboard, a spoon and painful wires that never open properly all on my own. The only thing my friend did was gluing the tin foil onto the cardboard #thinkershield#piano#visionimpaired

Day 28 - Throwback Thursday
First photo was of me on my wedding day - 8th November 2014. At that point in time, I was still overweight but was sporadically exercising now and then
Second and third photo was taken 3 years later at a friend's wedding on the 23rd September 2017. I was not exercising at all at that point in time and was over indulging in fast food and alcohol
My reality check happened when I tried to put on my wedding shirt and it didn't fit like it used to. I tried sucking in my gut, tried stretching out the shirt and even went as far as blaming the dry cleaners for shrinking my shirt... but in reality, i was getting obese and denied it was actually happening. I had gotten to a point where I just blocked out the fact that I was fat and even when looking in the mirror, I would tell myself "its not that bad"
Over a year of procrastination, blaming the world for my problems and waiting for the stars to align (which they never did), I finally put my ass into gear and actually doing something about it! 👊
My vision is no longer impaired by denial and I've accepted me for who and what I am - be it fat, skinny, short, long, brown or blue
It's my time to shine baby, I'm betting on me!! 💣
For something different today, I'm going to count down 10 habbits I still have even though I can't see. Picture: Mel talking to the camera. She is wearing a pink shirt and has her hair in a ponytail #myblinkylife#visionimpaired#blindness
AND....Dan ran another marathon #thatshowherolls 🏃♂️.
From Dan: 'Great day with my daughter Talia Berlin (who captured the day via photos) at California International Marathon with 2018 USABA Marathon Nationals sponsored by #HansonMcClain. Did not come into this one fully marathon trained and really happy with the 3:47:14 time. I actually #negativesplit which may be my first time ever in a marathon. Thanks to awesome guides and new friends Chris Shull and Paolo Taboga. Super thanks to Richard Hunter for organizing this whole event. Talia, awesome photos of the whole #USABA team all weekend.
Kiva, että on kuulutukset ratikoissa ja busseissa! Ennen isännän piti yrittää mutkista ja äänistä arvata, missä kohdassa reittiä mentiin. Sekin on kiva, että Helsingin vammaisneuvosto antoi HSL:lle esteettömyyspalkinnon noista kuulutuksista. Saikohan HSL jänissuikaleita?
• product & cause • seen or heard of an ethical cosmetic company that helps achieve better health outcomes for vulnerable groups? Well now you have team! @indigoandiris are well known for their feature mascara product where 50% of all levitate mascara profit is donated to curing treatable blindness in the pacific islands through the @nzfredhollows foundation nz. @fredhollows is an epic org that works throughout the Pacific Islands providing healthcare to the visually impaired where four out of five people are preventably blind and a sight restoring surgery costs as little as $25NZD. This gorg brand is branching out far and wide, and we adore seeing a game changer in a beauty industry overwhelmed with unsustainable and unethical business practice. And to top it all off, as if they weren’t doing a fab job anyway, their range is #vegan , #crueltyfree , and shipped in compostable materials. You know how we keep saying only one small change at a time, sub out your old mascara perhaps? Time to make a difference. Great work indigo&iris, you are doing epic things 🙌🏻
I am so thankful that I went with my gut on this one. Even after being denied appointments from Optometrists because "we don't typically do exams on children under 4." I continued to push and found a Dr that is not only so kind and patient with Miles but beyond knowledgable. Miles had very little symptoms of vision issues at all but his left eye started turning in slightly about a month and a half before we met Dr. Ryan. It turns out that this kid is literally almost blind in his left eye. We are making progress. He went from needing to view images at 125% down to 80% in just under 3 months. Always trust your gut. Always. #childrensvision
When we first learned about Eddy’s vision issues (very late at 5 yrs old) we worried about a million things...from how much improvement was possible to what she would be able to do. I’ve been in lots of ‘mommy blog groups’ for parents with kids with vision or eye health issues. We all worry about coordination and depth perception, balance and peripheral vision (to name a few)
Well- let me just say— eddy is not a natural ballerina. Not because of her vision- but bc it’s not her strength. She has not been light on her toes in any of her previous attempts at ballet. Hula- yes, ballet no. But today- she really showed what determination, practice, and commitment can do. (And she always performs without her glasses so she cannot see audience!) this little #nutcracker nailed it today! #ballet#ballerina#shecanswimanddance#coolkidswearpatches#holidayperformance#whataweekforthiskid#eyehealth#visionimpaired#amblyopia#strabismus
It’s getting harder to keep up. My vision is so bad. Blindness. I need to use these filter glasses to take away the white and blue lights from my eyes. I have to use the voice control on my phone; everything I write is being said back to me. I’ve loved Instagram for all my years on here. But now it’s harder. I can’t read your posts. I can’t really see the photo. I struggle. My eyes hurt and I feel my vision has worsened since my last control at the eye ward. I’m going back in there at December 11th and I’m anxious. This is killing me. It’s so sad and I just wanna cry. It’s my greatest loss; not walking? Okay. Not being able to sit? I can handle that as well. Not being able to hold my own head? I’ve accepted that. But loosing my vision is not something I’m accepting. I’m just not there yet. Everything I love is being taken away from me. Using social media. I’ve been good at it. Raising awareness. But now... now it’s incredibly hard. Because I can’t keep up anymore. And my tears are just streaming down my face. Category 4 of blindness. I can’t accept that. It’s heartbreaking.

Cailee’s last visit to the retinal specialist in California was a bit of mixed emotions. He left retina is inflamed causing more impairment. She has 20/400 with glasses on and that’s about the best it will be. He is keeping a close watch for signs of detachment. I was really hoping for better news. I’m not sure how having such unbalanced acuity will affect her. She’s 20/400 in the left and 20/60 in the right #caileescorner#girlsaretough#visionimpaired#beachgirl
One of my favorite days of the year is driving Tati to The Enchanted Hills Camp in Napa every July. This year we were able to help her friend Ray get there too! So fun! We are so thankful to all those that help rebuild this camp in less than a year after all the fires that left so many without homes, land, animals etc. Have a great week at camp girls!!!! #happycampers#enchantedhills#thelighthousegroup#visionimpaired 🏕🌲🌿🍃🍂🍄🦋
