Exactly four years ago a group of my friends and I ran 26.2 miles in this exact marathon. At the time, my pace was around 8 min/mile. I wasn’t tired and my knees didn’t ache. This last Sunday I was happy to finish half of that distance at a slower pace. I was tired and my knees where killing me. •
Between the two races my body has endured some change. It has grown two babies, birthed two babies (one natural birth and one medicated), it’s breastfed for 16 months and over the last four years I have lost an innumerable amount of sleep. With the physical changes also comes the psychological too. The last four years have been much like “adolescence”, a transitional period we all know as “awkward” and “hard”. •
Do we even have a name for women who become pregnant then transition into motherhood? Much like adolescence, we mothers experience hormonal changes, identity confusion, emotional swings and tons of physical morphing. Thanks to @alexandrasacksmd we do have a name. It’s called #matrescence, and if you look it up you will find some pretty cool things. •
Although #Matrescense has hit me hard this time around I am constantly in awe at what our bodies can achieve time and time again. It might be a little more vulnerable these days but one thing remains, the pride I have to be a woman. I am so thankful for that!
Run away, to be more connected 🏃🏼♀️ One of the most drastic feelings I used to get when I had PND was a feeling of wanting to run away. I had this specific vision or driving to Scotland with my kids and staying in a Premier Inn 🙈
It was literally the worst plan ever and I’m so glad I never got to the point of doing it. What I’m trying to say is depression and anxiety often makes you push people away. It can make you feel like running away so you don’t have to deal with what’s happening.
I have found the best way to stop feeling the urge to run away.... is to run away! Literally RUN, even if it’s for 2minutes. Just run. Or even walk fast. Get your heart rate up. Get some fresh air and move.

Missing the sun, sea and sand but oddly I'm not missing running as much as I thought I would. Despite pretty much having a four month rest from it before the marathon, it was a forced rest and I was a stressy mess. Now I can truly sit back, relax and let my foot mend! .
Next run will be a @parkrunuk with my dad when I'm home for Christmas, followed by a New Year's Day 10k with @hannahlgrobbelaar and Ruth!
The Boot Scootin' Boogie was my last race pre-op. This was a big country festival in NH. We kept a solid pace for our first mile, and did minimal walking. The end was a foot race, and even though we couldn't stay for the brews, it was a solid race. I finished in at 53:16, which put me at a pace of 17:09.
