Tough day at the office today at the Clonakilty half. Lots of hills and added wind to make my 10th and last half of the year a slog and a half. Got to 10k without any problems but then my hamstrings started tightening up, I took on plenty of water but it didnt help so I dropped my pace and decided to just focus on finishing without one of my hamstrings going. Thankfully I made it to the finish line with no injuries but I think I may need a visit to the physio. Alls well that ends well I guess😁💪👍👌🏃♂️
💭 Running... that moment of your day that you keep challenging yourself and even better, you beat yourself ALL THE TIME! 👊🏻💪🏻 ✨Best sport ever. Grateful for being addicted to it ♥️🏃♀️

What’s rare is wonderful 💫 —————————————
I hadn’t been to the gym and actually lift some metal in months. Decided to avoid the downpour in Galway on Sunday and do my long run on the treadmill...large mistake. After half an hour I was feeling physically fine but mentally beyond bored - after a lot of contemplating whether to stay on or off I said I’d do some weights. With no real plan I did an arms session...and actually really enjoyed it! Big up to those that run for longer than 30 minutes on a treadmill - even with music I could not hack it 👎 I could have forced myself to finish my long run on the treadmill horrendously bored - but I didn’t. And you don’t have to “force” yourself either. No major fitness will be lost because of this change of plan and while my arms certainly don’t show it, I can assure you that they sure felt it this morning. 💪 🏃♀️ #runnergirls#girlswhorun#girlswholift#gym#gymselfie#fitness#nike#garmin#imoveme#20x20#cantseecantbe#training
2 mile races. I kinda love them but find them tough. The pace is faster than a 5k race and they are over faster. I’ve seen my times improve, which feels good. Since Aug, I’ve knocked over a minute (ahem a minute 13 seconds) off my time. Last night, I didn’t end the race series with a PB - that would have been too much of a fairytale, but I was close. #motherrunner#mumswhorun#5krunner#dublinrunners
Post run happiness!!
I started practicing yoga years ago to counteract the stiffness I experienced from not stretching properly after a run. I’ve neglected my running in recent years; delighted to be back out there. Slow and steady, but still made it! The endorphins still do it for me! So much so, I forgot to stretch afterwards!!😝 #morun#dublinmorun#dublinrunners#dcm2019
UNTIL THE ROOF COMES OFF

On a fucking mission & dragging yis all with me. Believe. Mind yourselves. Mind your mates. Mind your mental health. Check in with someone today, see if they're all good. ❤
This morning we hit the target of raising €1000 for @pieta.house one of the most important organisations in this country today. Thank you everyone for contributing. As a result, 1 person will now receive the support they need with a full programme of counselling. The fundraising link is still active if anyone would still like to contribute.
You can follow the progress of my 50k run through the streets of Dublin from 8.30am tmoro. I'll be posting updates on my stories as I stumble around!
These challenges give me fulfilment & purpose & help justify everything I've done to better my life over the past 6 years. Thank you for sharing in the madness this year.
Run results finally came in this afternoon. 37.34 for the 4 mile ‘Run The Liberties’.
I felt my fitness level had dropped over the last few weeks, so was happy with that. I half expected to struggle to get under 40.
I also finally bought running shorts I like - no chafing, no riding up, no nothing. Yay. Nike you rock🙌🏻 They are 8” long shorts - and the biz. #thecakemum#mumswhorun#5krunner#irishrunner#dublinrunners
Light vs dark. Good vs bad. Healthy vs injured.
Nearly 80% of runners get injured at some time . That’s an awfully high statistic for a non contact sport. The two main reasons are structural imbalances, such as having one leg shorter than another, bio-mechanical issues, or experiencing a severe weakness in a certain muscle group.
The other reason is upping the mileage or speed before your body is prepared for it.
So what can be done?
For the structural imbalances, you should start working on a running specific strength program. Get the glutes firing properly focus on proper running form and the rest will follow.
For mileage, well , that’s easy. You just need to cut it back and increase no more than 10% each week.
The mental part is quite often the hardest. Try switching to low impact sports like swimming /pool running, cycling or whatever suggestions your doctor or physio tells you. That way you won’t lose too much of your fitness or muscular strength while still keeping your head in the game. I’m like a demon if injured and for someone that’s usually quite positive and upbeat, it can really get me down. That’s why it’s important to still be active with my time and keep to some sort of training program.
Also, plenty of people go through this and sometimes having a good moan about it to a sympathetic ear can do the world of good. Your friends might not give a shit, but if they love you they’ll just have to smile and feign interest and you can do the same for them some day.
Remember that this won’t be forever and you can come back stronger than before. Positivity is key.
